Agile Leadership and Team Coaching Program Overview:

This 26-week Agile Project Team and Leadership Program was developed to accelerate Agile Teams and their Management in agile work.

We think it’s time to change the narrative of how leaders and managers are involved in agile delivery by showing them “how” to provide principle-based servant leadership with THEIR teams to accelerate their time to market.

Problem with the traditional agile coaching model
This Program was created to fill a much-needed gap in Agile training and adoption services.   
 
Currently, most coaching and training focuses primarily on the Team and with a full-time coach.  While this approach has helped somewhat, the results are limited because the engagements are expensive and too short, and having a full-time coach leads to Teams dependent on the Coach, so proper understanding does not happen.  Also, without the Teams Leadership involved, legacy processes usually block the Team.

A Modern Approach To Agile Coaching

We believe a better approach is to coach the Team and its Leadership in such a way as to make the Teams leadership so knowledgeable that they become the Team’s Agile Coach.  We do this by teaching and reinforcing Lean Principle Base Leadership concepts for over 26 weeks, with Team’s involvement.

For change to happen, the Coaching Program needs to be done over a more extended period so that the Leadership and Team can practice what they learn so it becomes embedded and second nature.

Once this way of working is embedded, you will see an acceleration in your business performance like you have never experienced before.

The Program uses a similar approach that is used to train medical doctors called “See One”, “Do One”, and “Teach One”. This approach ensures ‘understanding’ instead of simply ‘knowing”. We have experienced that understanding, and the results from this approach lead to behavioral change.

26-WEEK Agile Team Coaching Program Outline

Step #1 – Agile Leadership and Team Coaching Program
First, Scrum Masters Inc assigns a dedicated Agile Principle-based Leadership Coach who will work with the team and its leadership until the 26-week program is complete.

The Coach will conduct three meetings to gain background and develop a plan:

  • A one-hour meeting with the Scrum Master and Product Owner.
  • A one-hour meeting with the Team
  • And lastly, a one-hour session with the manager they report to.

From these meetings and in collaboration with Leadership, Scrum Master, the Product Owner, and the Team, we will create a Backlog of items we will work on over the 26-week program and assign KPIs to measure progress.

Additionally, we introduce the Team and Leadership to Lean and Flow concepts, which will be our primary metrics to measure improvement.

Step #2 - Program Kick off - 4 hours

  • Stand up Team & Agile Leadership and Team Coaching Program

Step 3 - 26 weeks - Scrum Team and Leadership Coaching

Scrum Team Coaching and Process – Weeks 2-26 inclusive
• Bi-weekly 1-hour Scrum Master meeting to review progress toward goals and provide coaching support to help Scrum Master progress to completion.
• Provide Weekly, small training sessions to fill knowledge gaps within the Team.
• Teach the Scrum Master how to develop knowledge material so they can teach their Team.
• Bi-weekly 1-hour Team, Scrum Master, and Product Owner meeting, ideally after or during the retrospective (alternating with the Scrum Master meeting)

Leadership Coaching Process – Weeks 2-26 inclusive
Throughout the program, we engage the Teams’ direct Leadership with a goal of modeling the behaviors of a Servant Leader. As the program progresses and the leaders build an understanding of how to apply the Agile Principles in their day-to-day activities, they are encouraged to take on a more direct role in leading the team through the program under the coach’s guidance.

The Leader will be asked to
• Provide initial input on the challenges they would like to see addressed in the team
• Identity what success would look like
• Participate in the bi-weekly Scrum Master\Product Owner Meetings
• Participate in 1 on 1 coaching on a monthly basis
• Prepare for and Deliver Progress Meetings with the coaches guidance
• Engage in supporting the team in their improvement efforts as appropriate

• The report will be in the form of three Powerpoint slides and is expected to take 15 min. If there is a scheduling challenge, the report and presentation will be recorded on Zoom and emailed to Leadership to be viewed at a convenient time.

Outcomes from 26-Week Agile Leadership and Team Coaching Program

• Your Team will be able to develop their training material for your Teams based on Agile Principles and deliver that training to them.
• The Leaders for your Team will use Lean Principles and Servant Leadership to accelerate overall system (Team, Product Owner, and their interaction with the rest of the organization) performance.
• Scrum Master and Leadership to be self-sufficient in improving, managing, and scaling agile and on solid footing to become Coaches.
